61,000 Visitors, 3,600 Stalls, One Missing Buying Memory at IIJS 2026

A trade fair can be commercially successful and still leave value on the floor. IIJS Bharat Premiere 2026 delivered formidable scale. The design question is what happens when a buyer has seen the hundredth tray, crossed two Mumbai venues and accumulated more possibilities than any human can remember.

My argument is simple: the next improvement at IIJS should not be another spectacle. It should be a better buying memory—a consented, exhibitor-neutral system that helps visitors retain why an object mattered, compare it later and convert discovery into a useful commercial conversation.

The scale is real

GJEPC’s official show information describes the 42nd edition across 135,000 square metres, with more than 2,100 exhibitors and 3,600 stalls. It ran from 5–9 August 2026 at Jio World Convention Centre and 6–10 August at Bombay Exhibition Centre. The event finished more than two weeks before the post-show report used here was published.

Business of Jewellery’s 25 August report says more than 61,000 people attended, including over 5,000 international visitors from 80 countries and more than 2,700 international buyers. It attributes these attendance numbers to GJEPC; they are reported outcomes, not Afternoon estimates.

At this scale, the organiser and the buyer are solving different problems. The fair maximises range, access and meetings. The buyer minimises uncertainty: which collection fits my customer, which construction solves a price problem, which supplier can repeat quality, and what deserves scarce working capital? A fair can solve navigation without solving judgement.

What IIJS already gets right

GJEPC’s visitor communication listed digital badges, interactive 3D floor plans and shuttle services between venues. It promoted dedicated sourcing sections for natural and coloured stones, lab-grown diamonds, machinery and technology, and The Select Club for high-end jewellery.

This is useful exhibition architecture. Segmentation reduces wasted movement; badges reduce entry friction; floor plans orient visitors; two venues expand capacity without pretending one hall can contain the industry.

The post-event analysis also identifies more selective buying under higher gold prices. It reports Indian gem and jewellery exports of US$9.17 billion from April to July 2026, up 2.44% year on year. Studded gold jewellery exports rose 21.09% to US$2.24 billion, silver rose 72.19% to US$508.18 million and platinum rose 17.20% to US$77.82 million.

Those figures make buyer memory commercially important. When inventory is expensive, a retailer does not need more unstructured inspiration. They need evidence for why a design, weight, price architecture or supplier deserves a decision.

The gap: navigation is not recollection

The public material shows strong tools for finding halls, exhibitors and categories. It does not publicly demonstrate a universal cross-exhibitor layer for capturing the reason behind a buyer’s interest and carrying that reasoning into follow-up. This is not proof that exhibitors or visitors lack their own tools; it is a critique of the visible fair-wide experience.

A badge scan can tell a seller who arrived. It rarely tells the buyer what they noticed. A photograph records a tray but can lose weight, price band, construction, lead time and intended customer. Catalogues preserve inventory while burying judgement. That is the difference between a lead system and a buying-memory system: one helps sellers chase people; the other helps buyers decide.

How IIJS could build a better buying memory

1. Save the reason, not just the stall

A buyer could scan an exhibitor-approved object code and select one brief reason: margin potential, lightweight construction, unusual craft, export fit, replenishment confidence or customer request. Add a private note and an optional photograph where permitted. The decision context matters more than another saved image.

2. Make the shortlist buyer-owned

The shortlist should belong to the visitor, not become an automatic lead dump. Buyers choose which entries to share. Exhibitors receive details only after explicit release. That protects privacy and improves lead quality because a shared item signals considered intent.

3. Compare after sensory overload

At day’s end, the system could generate a quiet comparison organised by the buyer’s criteria—ticket size, metal weight, lead time, geography, exclusivity and reason saved. No public ranking is required. The tool should support judgement, not turn jewellery into a score.

4. Design the seven-day follow-up

Ask buyers to resolve saved items within seven days: request terms, schedule a call, hold for later or decline with an optional reason. Exhibitors gain cleaner next steps; organisers gain anonymised evidence about where interest converts or stalls.

5. Return learning to the floor

Privacy-safe patterns can inform future segmentation. If international buyers repeatedly save finished silver for design differentiation but abandon follow-up over certification or lead time, a later edition can address that friction through onboarding, programming or exhibitor education.

What should be measured

Test the memory layer against a suitable control group. Useful measures include saved-object completion, percentage of saves voluntarily shared, seven-day resolution, meeting-to-order progression, buyer-reported confidence, exhibitor response time and opt-out rate.

Do not claim shipment value as if the fair caused it alone. Currency, gold prices, inventory cycles, weddings, festive demand and prior supplier relationships affect orders. The clean first question is behavioural: can the tool reduce forgotten intent and improve follow-up quality?

What could go wrong

The system must not become surveillance. It should not secretly track dwell time, reveal private notes or turn every scan into a sales message. Photography restrictions, design confidentiality and competitive sensitivity need explicit controls.

It must also resist flattening jewellery into database fields. Craft, touch, trust and aesthetic judgement cannot be reduced to dropdowns. The digital layer should preserve a human reason and facilitate a conversation, not replace one.

The opportunity beyond jewellery

Indian trade shows in fashion, interiors, hospitality and materials face the same problem. Organisers invest in scale and wayfinding, exhibitors invest in presentation, and buyers leave with fragmented memory. The most valuable experience-design commission may be the invisible layer between discovery and decision.

IIJS has already built the stage at extraordinary scale. Its next advantage is helping 61,000 visitors remember less, better.
